John Donne
(by Michael Clem)
I always live in a house that faces
Straight ahead to the springboard East
I keep my back to the solar goodbye
But I’ll wave at the least
I like to keep me a watchful lookout
From my cynical sentry post
I turn my back to the welcome wagon
and keep my curtains closed
‘Cause I feel like John Donne
Shake my fist at the rising sun
You’re busy, I’m still dizzy
It’s still evening to me
I’m not ready for
I’m not ready for… I’m not ready for thee
Cooler than the back of the pillow
Warmer than an inbound train
Except the gust that’ll knock me sideways
so I best not complain
Let’s make the best of the situation
and for the record: you’re wrong/I’m right
I’m gonna set my watch back an hour
and stretch out the night
CHORUS
I always sleep in a bed that faces
Straight ahead to the springboardEast
If you don’t want illumination
Then don’t stare at the beast
CHORUS
