LAST PICK
by Michael R. Clem
I’m the new kid at school – filled with doubt & stress
Laying low in the classroom – then comes recess
Nobody knows my skills – much less my first name
& I’m the last pick for the kickball game
Last pick
The team I’m on is struggling – choking at the plate
Getting shelled on defense – while I just sit and wait
Oh, but when that ball gets rolled to me – I will put you all to shame
you’ll regret I was the Last Pick for the Game
For upon my turn to kick
I will say “Ladies & Gents…
Oh Ye of Little Faith
& lack of confidence
You’ll rue the day you snubbed me
for my talent is so immense
Watch me clear this red rubber sphere
and send it right over the fence!”
[Yeah, that’s what’s gonna happen, alright
I’m probably gonna set a school record
Probably make the school paper
and you know that red rubber ball that goes PONK! ?
Well, you can buy it a plane ticket, man
Cuz it’s taking a flight
and you guys are gonna eat crow ALL NIGHT
That’s right]
The class says “Hey, you’re UP, new kid” – I say “Oh yeah, hurl big red toward me
I’ll swing this mighty leg of mine – and soon you chumps will see”
But my visions of grandeur are shattered – to the amusement of the class
I tripped & flipped upon the ball and fell upon the ass-phalt
They rushed me to the clinic
For aspirin — I got two
The nurse, she lovey-doved me
and asked “What on Earth did you do?!”
I tried to sound heroic
but she knew it wasn’t true
She said nothing seemed broken
but my pride was black and blue
I’m the new kid at school – filled with low self esteem
Funny, I haven’t moved up the order, as a draft choice for a team
Everyone knows my lack of skills – and they refer to me by name
as the last pick for the kickball game
as the last pick for the kickball game
You all wait
’til tomorrow’s recess
