Little Green Homes
(by Michael Clem)
You be my thimble, and I’ll be your iron
We’ll walk dice in hand, along Baltic Ave
Got running water, and juice off the grid
Blankets in winter, and fans when it’s warm
The Archer’s moved in, back in the late 50s
For a price that today would buy a cheap Chevy car
Sharing one full bath, will test a clan’s mettle
And a litter of kids share the 2nd Bedroom
and these little green homes become big red houses
Packed close together, just 10 feet apart
Who needs a yard if the kids play inside
When size truly matters for the the house not the heart
Today I’m your top hat, and you are my race car
We’ll segway the hood, like Park Place and such
AC & gas logs ignite on command
Heat coils melt all the ice off our walk
These trendsetters bought the deed from the Archers
They bulldozed the shack, they were after the land
and they dropped this McMansion to the edge of the lot
with so much square footage, they’d never have to touch
Now these little green homes, become big red houses
Packed close together, just 10 feet apart
Who needs a yard if the kids play inside
When size truly matters for the the house not the heart
Their yard was our diamond, our gridiron, too
Their yard was Red Rover & British Bulldog
Their house could host twenty – Their home could hold plenty
They never once felt their place was too small
and these little green homes, become big red houses
with circular drives, and fake stone facades
Kidney shaped pools, require big fences
Don’t need no windows, the skylights are fine
now space won’t buy love or spur conversation
So add a fourth floor, and you won’t have to meet
A fireman’s pole, drops straight to your Porsche
Before your spouse wakes, you’re a block down the street
These little green homes become big red houses
Packed close together, just 10 feet apart
Who needs a yard, just keep it all inside
When size truly matters for the the house not the heart
