You
(by Michael Clem)
You never knew your mother
You never knew your dad
You barely know the circumstance of the one night that they had
You’re the only token of that night
Thank God for that
You—
Now you’re second guessing
If you have a place
But when arms embrace you
You’re looking for more space
You like the things that work for you
Until they cease to work
You—
I’m not blessed with wisdom but I’ve learned a thing or two
Done my share of bad things and some I can’t undo
What I see from where I stand are things you never knew
By my book of right and wrong mistakes don’t look like you
Mistakes don’t look like you
Your children sure do love you
They don’t have to try
Most your words don’t faze them
Except the words good bye
The youngest grabs your shirt tails
And she begs you not to go
You—–
You say you want your freedom
Perhaps you don’t belong
But when you shed attachments
There’s still something wrong
You’re a gem who’s lost at times
But dammit, you belong
You—
